It’s not valentines day, mother’s day, my birthday or any special day but I was awaken by my two naughty nephews with the smell of burnt french toast and fresh passion juice in their hands saying that they made me breakfast. They stood there till I got off bed and conviniently moved the breakfast feast out of bed to the dinning table. Even then they still stood there to make sure I ate and enjoyed my meal. What can I say? Sometimes they spoil me.
Eating the burnt yet rare french toast brought me memories of my own child hood at about their age. I would wake up in the morning go to the kitchen and prepare a surprise breakfast for dad and mom, sometimes it was the task for the whole gang to embark on. My brother would lay the table while each of my sisters did what they do best, scrambled vegetable egg panache (I have no idea why my sister called her eggs that, may be it sounds good or she had just learned a new word in school. I doubt she remembers), plumpy pancakes with corn syrup, juice, fruit salad and whatever else we could think of. It goes without say that we were better cooks then than they are now at the same age:-) But it wasn’t about the cooking, it was all about wanting to express our love and care for the two people that always got up before us to make sure that the day would go Ok!
Because the stove is the one thing that is usually out of bounce unless you are under adult supervision, may be taking on the breakfast challenge was also a way of saying thank you for being there now please wake up and see how we have grown- we can cook now!
Watching my nephews looking at me and waiting for approval, I knew that they were also trying to say thank you and asking me to take a momentary pause to see how fast they are growing and taking up responsibilities all on their own. And may be just may be, they are also saying that despite all the reprimand I often give them, they love me very much;-)
That being said, I decided to see what the internet has to say about breakfast in bed.Numerous images of attractive trays and happy faces, from those images numerous suggestions, everyone seems to know how it should look like and what it should do for a relationship. Epicurious, online cooking school even has a course tailored for that breakfast moment. Even ask men.com thought fresh fruit juice and french toast was romantic enough to feature in their printable ‘a romantic breakfast in bed suggetion’, thumbs up to my nephews for being in the right track for romance. They are going to make some women happy some day and until then let me enjoy the occasional pampering:-)
For me this loving thought through a simple act was a moment for reflection on life and the relationships we have with family members and strangers who become dear friends and with some luck among them we find loving life long partners. The time we spend getting busy with life that we can make up for with a simple act, a piece of bread.
Thinking of a breakfast in bed treat but don’t know how to get about, start with these two sites, best of luck!
