The street art of Jozi

“Graffiti is one of the few tools you have if you have almost nothing. And even if you don’t come up with a picture to cure world poverty you can make someone smile while they’re having a piss.

I am not an artist. I do some few drawings but not confident enough to call them art. Thinking about it, I can not call it art at all because my definition of art is something that would make me rich, win me awards or demand attention from onlookers.  So with that I rule out any association of this post to those of an expert opinion.

I love art. I really love the clever use of colours, outlines and text. I love it more when I can see it in unexpected places outdoors. This is why I find myself enchanted by street art whether it has been put there to decorate the public space, as branding for a particular business or the result of vandalism from free-spirited artists, I just love it all.

Here is a few of the street art that I came across while out and about in Johannesburg:

Street art is an umbrella term defining forms of visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues.
